Last night (or more likely a couple of nights ago by the time this goes up) Liz and I went to see Born Ruffians at the Opera House. We had fun. Somehow, we ended up on the balcony standing Luke Lalonde's mom and Liz chatted with her a bit, more on that later...
The two openers were Hooded Fang and Henri Faberge and the Adorables. I'll admit, after about 3 songs into Hooded Fang's set I wasn't particularly sold on their brand of boy-girl pop, was looking down at my (proverbial) watch, and was waiting for Born Ruffians. Then, they played 'Land of Giants' at which point I said to myself: "R.O.B. you ought to check out their album" to which I replied to myself"Yes, yes I should". Looking forward to hearing their s/t EP.
Next, Henri Faberge and the Adorables came out all costume clad, which, I suspect, was not Halloween related. I'm not really sure what to make of their music, at times I really liked it, at times I was kind of like... huh?, but certainly, they put on an entertaining show (as evidenced by the photo above). And, yes, he is in zebra print underpants and a cape.

The Ruffians, whom I had never seen before, put on an excellent show in front of a packed hometown crowd. Luke Lalonde's peppy, yelpy vocals had the crew in front of the stage jumping, clapping, singing along, and crowd surfing (toward the end). The majority of their set was from their critically acclaimed (by me, among others) 2008 release Red, Yellow & Blue with a smattering of old stuff and yet to be released material. They closed with their version of Grizzly Bear's 'Knife', which was also terrific. And best of all, I had so much fun I think I'm going to go to more shows this month!
Oh, and in an exciting new turn of events Liz bought me a new camera for my birthday (awwwww). And although we weren't brave enough to get close enough to the stage to take any decent photos (thanks again for the photos Jen) the camera has an audio recording function. So, some songs from Saturday:
